Nuisance vehicles and car meets - West End and St James's operation update |
||
|
Dear Resident,
We know vehicle noise is an issue in our part of London. On top of the normal bustle of our busy streets and roads - sports car meet-ups, weekend motorbike gatherings and the incessant revving of engines along Piccadilly, Pall Mall and across the West End affects residents, businesses and visitors alike.
We are doing something about this antisocial behaviour.
Along with specialist traffic officers, Neighbourhood Policing teams from St James's and the West End have been conducting proactive night-time patrols, deterring these gatherings and issuing fines and warnings across three weekends. We've been able to deploy extra officers to hot spots across our neighbourhoods, based on intelligence and through constant communication with local residents, businesses and other stakeholders. Only through this kind of partnership working and co-operation can we fix this problem.
A Public Space Protection Order covering nuisance vehicles is in place for Westminster and fines have been handed out across these operations for breaches. Additional powers within the Police Reform Act around careless and inconsiderate driving allows us to give warnings to drivers, with other measures such as vehicle seizures an option for repeat offenders.
Teams across the West End, from foot patrols, emergency response, TSG, Traffic Units, Interceptor Teams and Met Special Constabulary have contributed to this successful uptick in activity. More operations are planned as we continue to disrupt and deter this antisocial activity.
We know large car meets have taken place in recent weeks with New Bond Street and Waterloo Place seeing the highest number of vehicles and observers. We would ask residents to report sightings of building car meets early to Police, to enable resources to be sent before more vehicles descend on the area. Please call 999/101 as needed.
Thank you.
